How Much is Your Stream Worth?

How Much is Your Stream Worth?

How Much Is Your Stream Worth? is a multi-platform project that explores the economic realities of modern music streaming. This project aims to reintroduce physicality and value back into how we experience music today by embracing the past.

This project advocates for artist support through physical means such as buying records, attending shows, and valuing music as labor. A set of motion interstitials split into Side A and Side B further this narrative: Side A evokes nostalgia and tangibility through vintage formats and older songs, while Side B critiques the passive nature of digital consumption. Finally, a printed zine deepens the commentary through essays and data visualization, bringing back a tactile counterpoint to the digital experience. Together, the project forms an immersive and critical reflection on music, value, and the changing industry of listening.

Website

howmuchisyourstreamworth.com is an interactive, scroll-based website that visualizes the disparity in artist compensation across popular streaming platforms. Users can input a number of streams and choose their streaming platform, triggering a cassette tape to unravel horizontally across the screen. The length of the tape represents the payout an artist would receive, offering a tangible visualization between services like Spotify, Apple Music, and Tidal. By combining nostalgic imagery with real data, the site encourages users to reflect on the value of music in the current streaming industry.

Motion Interstitials

Side B — Present

Poster

This poster was designed to engage music listeners by visualizing how little artists make through a cassette tape, bridging the past and present together. It encourages and educates listeners to turn to physical means of streaming in order to more meaningfully support their favorite artists.
